Orthodontics for children and teens

If your child or teenager isn’t eligible for HSE orthodontics, or would prefer more discreet teeth straightening treatment, they can still be treated with private orthodontics. There is a range of options available, including solutions which are near-invisible and removable.

Approximately one third of children require orthodontic treatment to fix malocclusions and concerns such as an underbite or overbite, as well as crooked teeth, crowded teeth or gaps in the teeth. Having straighter teeth isn’t just beneficial for your child’s confidence growing up, as straight teeth are also easier to clean and reduce the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease.

Is orthodontic treatment free for kids?

If they meet certain criteria and are referred by a general dentist, children under 18 years old can access free HSE orthodontic treatment. This usually involves being fitted with fixed metal braces.

If your child’s dentist recognises that your child will benefit from braces, they’ll be referred to a specialist orthodontist who will see if they’re eligible for HSE care. This assessment will be undertaken with a scale called the Index of Treatment Need (IOTN).

Cases with a clinical necessity for treatment – according to the IOTN criteria – include severe cases of missing teeth, crowded teeth, protruding teeth and bite concerns. They also include any case which stops teeth from growing normally. If your child is considered a ‘borderline’ case as far as necessity is concerned, the cosmetic impact of braces will be considered.

For children who don’t qualify for free HSE braces or just want a more discreet option, Smiles Dental offers private orthodontic treatment for kids and teenagers seeking a straighter smile.

If your child doesn’t qualify for HSE care or would like a more discreet option, your local Smiles Dental clinic may be able to provide private orthodontic treatment, including fixed braces (metal, ceramic, and lingual braces) and Invisalign aligners.

Most children will begin orthodontic treatment between 10 and 14 years old. There are cases when children will be treated at a younger or older age. However, the child will usually need to have most of their adult permanent teeth to qualify for treatment.

Braces for children and teens are effective and completed on time if there are no issues with the treatment, and so long as the dentist’s instructions are followed carefully.

Your child will be given concise advice and instructions throughout their treatment journey and during aftercare once the braces are removed. They will most likely need to wear a removable retainer for a period of time following treatment, which is necessary to stop the teeth from relapsing to their former position.

Kids are often keen to show their personality through their braces, and getting braces in bright or subtle colours is a simple way of doing so. Ask your dentist or orthodontist about colour choices during your consultation.
