Orthodontics
What is orthodontic treatment?
Also known as teeth straightening treatment, orthodontics involves the wearing of braces, aligners or other specially fitted devices to straighten misaligned teeth. Orthodontics can also rectify gaps between the teeth as well as correct common malocclusions such as underbites and overbites.
There are a number of orthodontic treatment options available. The most common include fixed braces, which are attached to the teeth with brackets and use wires to apply pressure. Clear removable aligners, such as Invisalign aligners, have become popular in recent years as a more discreet method for straightening teeth.
Braces are suitable for people of all ages, so long as they have their adult teeth and their teeth, gums and bone support are healthy and strong enough to undergo the treatment. At Smiles Dental, we provide braces and other orthodontic treatments to patients ranging from pre-teens to those in their 70s, helping them achieve a healthier, straighter and more confident smile.
How do braces straighten teeth?
Braces of every kind – whether clear removable aligners, hidden lingual braces, twin block braces or fixed metal and ceramic braces – all work by applying gentle and consistent pressure to the teeth.
This pressure gradually moves the teeth into the desired position, usually over a period ranging between six months and two years. Once the orthodontic treatment with braces is complete, you will need to wear a retainer to prevent any relapse and to keep your new straighter smile in place.
