Braces FAQs

What are braces and aligners for orthodontic treatment?

Both aligners and braces for orthodontic treatment are appliances used by orthodontists and dentists to correct teeth alignment concerns, including overcrowding, crooked teeth, gaps between teeth, protruding teeth or buck teeth, and overbites and other bite issues. The appliances apply gentle consistent pressure to move your teeth to the desired position.

How much do braces in the Republic of Ireland cost?

The cost of your braces depends on how complex or severe your misalignment is, what you’d like to achieve from orthodontics, and which type of brace is chosen. Your bespoke treatment plan from your Smiles Dental clinic will include a full breakdown of costs.

HSE braces for qualifying under-18s referred by their dentist may be available.

Frequently asked questions

Orthodontists are specialists who focus on bite correction, teeth straightening and correcting misalignments and malocclusions. Teeth straightening can be carried out by both dentists and specialist orthodontists.

Orthodontics can rectify a number of bite issues, alignment concerns and problems with eating and speaking. Crooked or crowded teeth can negatively impact your confidence, and may contribute to dental health issues such as gum disease and tooth decay, as misaligned teeth are more difficult to keep clean. If you or your child has issues with misaligned teeth or their bite, orthodontic treatment can make a significant difference.

Orthodontic treatment can correct most bite concerns, so long as they aren’t especially severe. You’ll be able to get suitable treatment recommendations during your initial orthodontic assessment.

Most patients will experience some discomfort after braces are fitted or adjusted. This should pass once your mouth gets used to the treatment and can be eased with over-the-counter painkillers.

Fixed braces use small brackets attached to the front surface of the teeth (or back surface if you have lingual braces), joined with a wire. Clear aligners are custom-made plastic removable appliances which are worn in a series, gradually realigning your smile with each new set.

Every orthodontic treatment journey is different. The length of treatment will depend on your specific needs, the severity of your misalignment and the type of brace used, but will typically be between six months (for cosmetic teeth straightening and some Invisalign treatments) and two years.

Children usually start orthodontic treatment between the ages of 10 and 15. However, some younger children may be accepted in certain cases, and there is no upper age limit for having braces fitted.

Some patients may notice the shape of their face gradually changing with orthodontic treatment, becoming more symmetrical. This is because some treatments for correcting bite issues will alter the position of your jaw.

Traditional fixed braces may be available in different colours – ask your dentist at your consultation. Clear, ceramic braces are made with tooth-coloured brackets and clear wires for a more discreet appearance.

Patients with fixed braces are advised to avoid sticky, crunchy or hard foods (e.g. toffees, nuts, carrots and crusty bread) as they could damage the wires. If you have orthodontic treatment with removable aligners, your diet won’t be impacted. It’s always best to avoid sugary snacks between meals if you’re having orthodontic treatment.
